Safety Tips During Heavy Haulage

Posted on: 7 August 2019

Heavy haulage trucks carry expensive cargo worth millions of dollars. As such, safety is always a concern during transport. The extract below discusses some safety measures that heavy haulage companies can adopt to prevent accidents on the road.

Use the Right Trucks for the Job

The weight and dimensions of the cargo will determine the trucks you will use. Objects of abnormal length and width are often transported using two trucks. Sometimes, you may require smaller trucks to haul or pull the heavy haulage truck on sharp inclines. Service the trucks before commencing transport.

Route Survey

Hazards such as sharp descents, slippery roads, low lying bridges and electrical cables might increase the risk of accidents. In collaboration with your client, determine how to overcome these challenges. More often than not, it is better to use a longer but safer route. Conduct a weather forecast to determine whether you will encounter harsh weather during haulage.

Driver Welfare

Below are a few ways to look after your drivers;

  • Conduct regular training to update them on new road regulations and changing truck technologies.
  • For long-distance haulage, trucks should have two drivers, each working a maximum of 6-8 hours per day.
  • Good remuneration will keep your drivers motivated. They will want the best for your company.
  • Encourage your drivers to be disciplined as they drive. For example, they should avoid drunk driving and texting as they drive.

Technology

Some companies employ sophisticated technology such as telematics to encourage safe driving behaviour. The system will provide real-time updates on the vehicle's speed and dangerous driving habits such as swerving and hard braking. The systems also allow remote access to the truck. They are helpful when transporting perishable items since you could adjust the temperature settings without involving the driver.

Reconnaissance

It is vital to have a reconnaissance team during heavy haulage. The team will provide information on prevailing road conditions. For example, it might be challenging to drive heavy haulage trucks through heavy traffic. The team will also liaise with local police to provide escort in urban areas.

Safety on the Road

The heavy haulage trucks must be visible to other road users. Under Australian law, the trucks should be escorted by pilot vehicles that will inform other road users of an incoming abnormal load. An emergency crew consisting of medics and mechanics should accompany the heavy haulage truck.

Safety should be your top priority during heavy haulage. Always use the right truck, survey the route, be mindful of your drivers' welfare, have a reconnaissance team and prepare your team for emergencies. Contact a heavy haulage company for more information.
