Tips for observing common courtesy when in a taxi

For many years, taxis have been useful to people from all walks of life. From business executives going to work to parents carrying groceries back home from the store, taxis always come in handy for transportation needs. However, not all passengers behave well during their taxi rides. Some openly violate road safety rules, while others don't practice proper etiquette when communicating with the driver.

Here are some basic, yet essential tips that will help you follow common courtesy on your next taxi ride.

1. Avoid eating in the cab

If you just got some tasty food from your favourite local restaurant, you may be tempted to pull it out and enjoy the meal during your ride. However, eating in a cab is not always a good idea. First off, you are highly likely to spill sauce, soup or any other fluid food items while on the road.

Not only will you stain your clothes, but you may also stain the seats of the cab in the process. This may lead to unnecessary tension between you and the taxi driver, something that is best to avoid.

2. Don't consume alcohol

While it's a good idea to leave your car at home when planning for a night out drinking, it is not a good idea to drink while in the taxicab. Not only is consuming alcohol while in a vehicle illegal in certain circumstances, it also presents a host of liability issues for you and the driver.

You may be excited to be heading to your favourite bar/restaurant, but you should refrain from consuming alcohol while in the taxi (or at any other time while on the road).

3. Don't overload

Many people are guilty of this one. It often sounds exciting to squeeze the whole group into a single taxi. Not only do you get to save on costs, you also get to have fun with your group during the ride. However, overloading is illegal and dangerous.

Most taxi drivers will not allow more passengers than is safely mandated, so prepare to call another cab if you have too many in your group.

4. Be clear about your destination

Perhaps the most frustrating thing for taxi drivers is dealing with customers who are unsure of where they're going. If you need help with directions, taxi drivers can be an excellent resource. However, don't simply take them around in circles because you're unsure of where you want to go.

5. Don't forget to tip

Finally, don't forget to offer a courtesy tip to your cab driver for a job well done. They rely on tips to meet their margins and to provide better-quality services.
