One of these building was transformed in 1946 into the School of the Americas. Here military and political logistics were developed to fight communism, and contest guerrilla initiatives and movements in Latin America. As stipulated under the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, the school was closed in the early 1990’s decade.
Many of the buildings in this area fell out of use and would have been destroyed if not for a Spanish tourism entrepreneur, Damian Barcelo. He converted this school into what we know today as the Melia Panama Canal Hotel.

The hotel is located ten minutes away from the Colon Free Duty Zone. It is considered a five star hotel and has 286 rooms. Its staff of consists of more than 200 people from Colon.
